Elementary social studies, history and geography: a guide for parents

We have updated the social studies, history and geography curriculum for Grades 1 to 8 to include new mandatory learning in Grades 1 to 3 and Grade 6. Teachers will start teaching the revised curriculum starting September 2023. 

The social studies, history and geography curriculum connects to learning in the secondary Canadian and world studies, Grades 9 to 12 curriculum. Throughout the learning in social studies, history and geography students will:

• become responsible, active citizens within the diverse communities to which they belong
• become critically thoughtful and informed citizens who value an inclusive society
• develop the skills they need to solve problems and communicate ideas and decisions about significant developments, events and issues.
